One of the neat stupid things that a person can do for their page, is to have a guestbook. This allows visitors to leave a message for the designer of the page. Not necessarily needed, but definately nice to have. It can be cool to have a place to go to when you feel like being complimented or popular. Don't worry too much about inappropriate entries. Any entries in your guestbook can be modified or deleted by you. This is especially helpful if people decide to place advertisements into your guestbook just to get traffic to their page of schemes.
Guestbooks, in essence, are one page that has a long listing of names, email addresses and messages (and anything else you indicate as a field in the book) left by whoever wishes to leave you a message. The viewer will be presented by a form to complete and then hit a submit button to send the information to a page. The submit button activates a CGI program. All you need to know about that program right now, is that it takes the information, converts it into code, then places it on a page that is viewable immediately.
The first place to look for a guestbook is at the place you have your page. Many sites provide guestbooks for their web page designers. You just sign up for yours and set the questions that you want people to answer.
If you are adventurous, you can obtain and use a guestbook program on your own, including setting up the CGI programming. (I wouldn't recommend the extra work unless you're interested in doing it for the fun and learning.) Sometimes, sites that you host your page at will not allow CGI programming as it puts a great strain on the server. (My ISP is like that.) That does not mean you can not have a guestbook. There are a few places that will host your guestbook, just like there are many that will host your page.
